“Sculptor and ceramicist Daniel Pontoreau works with both small and very large formats and uses all mouldable materials: clay, cast iron, steel, rubber. His mastery of ceramics (earthenware, stoneware, porcelain) allows him to create monumental works of considerable size. His influences are numerous; he is a contemporary of the second generation of Arte Povera and the Young British Sculptors, both of which are important references for him. Additionally, many artists have shaped his approach, from Andrea della Robbia to Morandi and Giacometti, as well as Denis Oppenheim, Robert Smithson, John Mason, Norbert Prangenberg, Gutai, and many others. However, due to his techniques, there is the imprint of a singular and unique sculptural universe in the field of contemporary sculpture. Aside from his many exhibitions in Europe, he is frequently shown in Japan, where his work particularly resonates with gardens and architecture. He regularly collaborates with architects and landscape designers on joint projects and creations. In 2018, he was awarded the Arts Medal by the Academy of Architecture. An indefatigable traveller, he has explored the American continent, sub-Saharan Africa, the Maghreb, Asia, and India. If new destinations were to be defined today, they would lead towards the field of astrophysics, the infinity of space.” — Luc Lang, March 2019
